UAV; Hunter II and RQ-1A Predator UAVs Needs Additional Modifications

Since the Predator has inverted "V" shaped stabilizers these stabilizers should contain wheel pants and wheels underneath to lessen weight and save costs in manufacturing, we need to bring down the costs of these units. Less mechanism will save weight and we can use that savings in weight for increased payload or more fuel to extend loitering time. I propose the rear Landing gear incorporated into this V-Tail assembly. Letรขโฌโขs move Murphy out of these aircraft and keep it simple, cheap to build and efficient.

http://www.danshistory.com/uav.shtml

This is being proposed to reduce costs of future UAV squadrons in manufacturing and to save weight and fuel efficiency for longer missions and greater range to provide eyes in the sky and security to the battlespace and our nations and allied borders. Redesigning UAV choices in your battlespace UAV siumulations and computer games will be necessary to keeping pace with the real world war planners as the technology hyperspaces the world of virtual reality.

Many of the current UAV models are being looked at for improvement in efficiency for added range, additional payload and stealth. Are you designs viable, are they better than actaul? Are you learning from aerospace engineers or are you still teaching them lessons in what works?

Sony Delays PlayStation 3

As a result of problems related to the mass production of a key component of its Blu-ray DVD player, Sony (SNE) will delay the European launch of its next generation video game console, the PlayStation 3 (PS3). Sony will also reduce the number of PS3 units immediately available in both the U.S. and Japan.

In the U.S., the PS3 will launch on November 17th, with approximately 400,000 consoles available for sale. The U.S. launch will come almost a week after the Japanese launch which will consist of merely 100,000 units.

Sony's PlayStation 3 is the successor to the PlayStation 2, the world's most popular (and as recently as July, the world's best selling) video game console.

The Number That Really Matters

The fact that there will only be 400,000 PS3 units available for sale in the United States on November 17th is totally unimportant. The launch date itself is unimportant. What matters is how many units will be available for sale in mid to late December.

Sony claims it will have 1 million to 1.2 million consoles available for sale by December 31st. I think it's safe to assume they don't plan to have many arrive between December 26th and December 31st. So, let's assume there will be at least a million PS3 consoles available for sale in the U.S. by Christmas.

Will that be enough to put a PlayStation in the living room of every household that wants one?

No. There will almost certainly be many people who have to go without a PS3 for Christmas, despite being willing to pay the very high price Sony is asking. But, that's nothing new. Other consoles (including the Xbox 360) have been launched without an adequate number of units immediately available for sale.

This isn't like failing to get enough Glad trash bags on store shelves. Once the console has launched, limited availability shouldn't cause many people to switch their planned purchase. If they want it and it's out, they'll wait for it.

A delay is much worse than a mere shortage. There's a promise (and a tangible product) behind a console that has already launched. So, very few people in the U.S. or Japan who planned to buy a PS3 are likely to change their minds because of a Christmas shortage รขโฌโ no matter how severe.

The Things That Really Matter

The success of any gaming platform is largely based on five factors:

Available Titles

Relative Launch Date

Price

Predecessor's Installed Base

Technology

Of these five, technology is by far the least important factor. The four most important factors (available titles, relative launch date, price, and predecessor's installed base) are difficult to separate. Clearly, having a predecessor with a large installed base (such as the PS2) can be tremendously beneficial, if you get satisfactory marks in the other three areas (titles, launch date, and price).

Predecessor's Installed Base

The PlayStation 3 dominates when it comes to having a predecessor with a large installed base. So, how does it score in the other three areas?

In terms of available titles, the PS3 scores as well as any of its competitors, if not better. However, none of the three consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii) does very well in this regard. Unfortunately, the titles are likely to be somewhat segregated by console. There will be quality games on each system; but, almost no one will buy all three. Simply put, there will be some games exclusive to each console that a lot of people would really love to play รขโฌโ but can't.

Also, there's the danger that both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will be seen as the more adult and less casual consoles. Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony have Nintendo to blame for this รขโฌโ but, let's put that issue aside for now.

Relative Launch Date

Returning to the list of factors that determine a console's success, let's consider the launch date issue. Sony clearly has a bit of a problem in Europe, because it will have one less Christmas season than both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. Some analysts think Sony will lose no more than a few hundred thousand console sales to substitutions. If that's true, lost revenue might be in the hundreds of millions rather than the billions.

Strong sales of the Xbox in Europe during the Christmas season would be a very bad indication for Sony. The combined price of an Xbox and a PS3 is prohibitively expensive. Furthermore, the two consoles are far more similar to each other than they are to the Wii. As a result, while some European Wii sales might be recoverable by Sony at a later date, because individuals will choose to buy the Wii first and the PS3 later, very few Xbox 360 sales would be recoverable. Essentially, every Xbox sold in Europe this Christmas is a PS3 that will never be born.

Three Separate Markets

The U.S., Japan, and Europe are really three very different markets. It's quite possible you could have a console that is very successful in one market and yet unable to get any real momentum in another.

Before this delay, I felt strongly that Europe was the market where the PS3 could come closest to duplicating the performance of the PS2 in terms of market share. There's a long-term danger that Microsoft will gain market share in the U.S. and Nintendo will gain market share in both the U.S. and Japan.

Obviously, Europe isn't as well defined a market as either the U.S. or Japan. So, it's much harder to predict how a certain type of console or a certain type of game will go over there. The U.S. and Japan are very clearly defined game markets, largely because they have very clearly defined consumer cultures in general and entertainment cultures in particular.

So, what does the PS3 delay mean for Sony's future in Europe? It's hard to say. I'm more interested in seeing what the installed base of each next generation console will look like in the American and Japanese markets after Christmas 2007, when we'll have the first real chance to predict how this round of the console wars will play out.

Of course, there are some predictions that seem pretty safe even now. For instance, it seems safe to say Sony will lose worldwide market share. Simply put, the PS3 won't be able to duplicate the market share dominance of the PS2.

So, most likely we're talking about Sony's PS3 falling somewhere north of catastrophic failure and south of market share gains. Although I think both of these scenarios are extremely unlikely, catastrophic failure is more likely, simply because improving upon the PS2's market share seems a near impossibility given the much tougher competition this time around.

Is there a real risk that the PS3 might end up being a catastrophic failure? I don't think so, simply because of the number of PS2 systems still out there. Price combined with solid competition on both of Sony's flanks is the only thing that could cause such a failure. If the price prevents widespread acceptance of the system, third party publisher support would be a problem down the line. Nintendo doesn't need a lot of third party support. Sony does.

Although I do think Sony is doing serious harm to its PlayStation line by insisting upon including Blu-ray and charging a ridiculous price, I don't think any amount of managerial ineptitude is likely to cause the catastrophic failure of a successor to such a dominant console as the PS2.

Price

If price isn't the elephant in the room, it should be. Most of the articles I read about the recently announced PS3 delay / production scale-down didn't say much about the pricing of the PS3. That's a mistake รขโฌโ especially, because several articles mentioned the laptop battery recall, which has nothing to do with the PS3 and very little to do with Sony (it has everything to do with lithium-ion batteries irrespective of their manufacturer).

The PS3's price is a big problem. One that might have manifested itself in poor Christmas sales, if the number of units available for sale had approached the expected demand. For now, Sony is planning on having so few units available in the U.S. by Christmas that the launch will go well even if the PS3 is ultimately a failure. Sony claims it will have 6 million units by the end of its fiscal year. A few analysts are skeptical, but Sony is sticking to that line.

In the weeks ahead, expect Sony to make a big deal about the fact that it will actually make more PS3 units available by the end of December than the number of Xbox 360s Microsoft had made available by the same time the year before. It's a valid point. But, it omits two key facts. The PS3 is launching after the Xbox 360 and there are more PS2 owners out there who will want to trade up for the new system.

Since the PS3 is launching after the Xbox 360, no one is waiting around to see what the alternative will look like. They already know what the Xbox 360 is, what it can do, and what (some of) the games available for it are. As soon as the PS3 launches, the comparisons can begin. That wasn't possible when the Xbox 360 launched and everybody knew the PS3 was on its way.

The second reason why no parallel exists between the demand for Xbox 360s at launch and the demand for PS3s at launch is simply that there are more PS2s out there. As a result, Sony having as many units available by Christmas as Microsoft had the year before would be a lot like Gillette having as many new razors available as Schick had produced the year before. The difference in market share obliterates any possible comparison.

So, even though I think the PS3 is far too expensive going into the Christmas season, I'm quite sure that fact won't be evident in the sales numbers, because there will be a severe PS3 shortage throughout 2006. Even if the PlayStation 3 is too expensive, it will look like it's selling well, because there simply won't be enough of them produced in 2006.

Why am I so convinced the PS3 is priced too high?

The PS3 is too expensive to be a Christmas gift. Around Christmas, a lot of these consoles are bought by parents as gifts for their kids. Parents are willing to pay a lot for them, because they're a huge one-time item for the kid (and the parents have been hearing about it since well before the launch). But, the prices likely to be charged in 2006 for the PS3 are simply beyond what parents are willing to spend.

It's not an issue of how much consumers have to spend versus the value they're getting. It's an issue of being psychologically unprepared for paying this kind of price for any gift.

It may be a price older gamers are willing to pay to get a PS3 for themselves. But, it's not a price parents will be willing to spend on their kids.

How To Become A Good Halo 2 Sniper

Sniping is one of the hardest things to do in Halo 2. It takes tons of practice and hours of playing to get good. Actually, some people never get better. Their foundation is built on bad habits. I've decided to come up with a set of guidelines to help you along.

-Always move around. Never camp out in one spot, no matter how good you think it is. It also makes you harder to hit.

-Always aim for the head. A headshot is an automatic one-shot kill.

-Check your motion sensor. You'll spend a lot of time trying to find people so it's good to zoom out every once in awhile to see if anyone's coming. Try doing this after every couple of shots or so.

-Unless you're incredibly skilled with the sniper, please do not try to use the sniper in every situation(i.e. in close and the enemy has a shotgun).

-Take good shots only. This kind of goes with the point above. Do not jump of a building and try to no-scope someone across the map. Take shots that you know have a good chance of hitting their target.

-Aim with the left thumbstick. It keeps the targeting reticule steadier. Use the right thumbstick only for minute adjustments to get that needed headshot.

Arcade Games - The Good Ole Days

I remember playing my first arcade game in a bar in Montreal. It was 1981 I was underage, drunk, in a digital delirium, and the arcade game was the original Pacman. This was about the coolest thing I had ever seen. I'd always had a thing for games, even before the first arcades and arcade games sprung up. Even before computer games for the home PC. I used to subscribe to games magazines that never, ever mentioned the word computer. This was something totally new and sumptuously fascinating. Countless hours of my well wasted youth were spent in arcades, long after plenty of beer swilling at the local pub. Arcade games, and computer games have come a long way since then, but there's nothing like your first time.

Frag This You Bourgeoisie Backgammond Barnacle

Shortly after my lascivious encounter with arcades and the hypnotizing arcade game jewels hidden within, my family purchased it's first home PC. A radio shack trs-80. More commonly called a trash-80. It was here that I learned the cunningly devious game of backgammon. Not sure I would have ever learned that game without being introduced to it by a computer. It's not the kind of game that would have appealed to a veteran of the arcade game wars. Something that belonged more to the smoky backrooms of a retirement home. Computers, arcades, and arcade games were already broadening my vistas.

Avast Commodore, Ya Scurvy Megabyte

Next on my list of technological wonders ya scallywags, is the Commodore 64. Now here was an arcade game killer if I every gazed upon one. Arcades are few and far between now, and the Commodore, is one of the reasons why. Why spend hours in an arcade, having a machina suck and swallow every last quarter in my pocket? When I can sit in the less the luxurious decadence of my basement playing the likes of jumpman, and setting arcade game style high scores for my baby brother to frantically try to match. Not like in the arcades where he could be humbled in front of the masses, but this arcade game jewel would serve my purposes none the less.

Arcadia Arise Oh Mighty Griffon

Old is new, black is blue, and from the depth, arises the legends of old and times forgotten. Huh? What I'm frothing forth about here, is that arcade games are back with a vengeance. All us old fogies, who remember time spent in arcades watching the neighborhood masters pummel evil incarnate up till level 9999 rejoice! You can once again relive the glories of the golden age of arcade games. Just google around a little, and you'll find free versions of all the great arcade game from the past. Not to mention a few new legends being born in the ancient art of arcade games. And hey save your quarters. These games are free as the air you breathe. Of course you better not let those quarters get too far, your gonna need them to keep that old jalopy of a Commodore in running order.

Essence Runescape

For those of you with limited RuneScape skills, essence running is an excellent way to earn money or runes. Even though there are numerous ways to essence run, it is all based on one basic concept. Because runecrafters can only carry 23-27 essences at a time, they are not able to accumulate very much runecrafting experience very quickly. As a runner, you are there to help others gain runecrafting experience. By doing so, you will be able to earn runes or cash.

There are various items needed for essence running. These include:

Boots of lightness No weapons or armor 27 Pure Rune Essence Something, such as Law Runes, to take up inventory space and therefore quicken the banking process

So how do you get started? Check out forums. There you will find people looking to hire essence runners. Once you find a potential employer, here are several things to keep in mind:

How much does the employer pay? Are you provided with essences? Are there bonuses available? How many runners do they have? How many essences are required per run? What is the employerรขโฌโขs runecrafting level? (More runes can be made from the same amount of essences in certain levels.)

In order to essence run successfully, you must trade the essence unnoted. It is also essential that you trade them at the correct temple. Remember to travel light. This means lightweight armor, boots of lightness, and bare essentials in your inventory.

Also, common courtesy will go a long way. Be sure to thank the crafter who traded with you. It is, after all, a free service. In order to avoid being neglected, only say "law me plz" if you are inside the Altar and no one is trading with you when you are to the side. Also, having two pouches does not mean that people will trade you twice. It just slows down the process. Finally, if you are inside the Altar, stand to one side. Avoid the line where the crafters are.

When earning runes, itรขโฌโขs important to know how you can use the type of rune you are running. First, there are four elemental runes: air, water, fire and mind. These are used in spells. Airs are generally best for lower level mages, as they are used for offensive spells. Higher-level mages will benefit most from fire, as they are used in god spells. Body runes are good for stat reduction spells. You will generally use only a few cosmic runes, as they have limited uses. Natures are among the most useful runes because they are used for high alchemy. Lastly, law runes are best for pure mages.

Armed with a few basics, you can try your hand at essence running and maybe youรขโฌโขll learn your own tricks of the trade.

Counter Strike: Iceworld Tactics

In Counter Strike, Iceworld is a controversial map indeed. People see it as requiring no skill or just as much skill as any other map. This article will attempt to show you some strategies and tactics on iceworld, a map that inspires love and hate from all facets of the CS community.

I learned Counter Strike on classic maps like mansion, assault, dust, and italy. Each one is a completely different animal. The each possess a noteworthy difference from Iceworld, especially as tactics look. They each have an objecive. Plant the bomb, rescue the hostage, and an unmentioned objective, get the VIP where he needs to go. Iceworld has no such objectives. It is a small map and looks very much like a pound(#) symbol from overhead. A buy zone is located in it's center and T's and CT's spawn across the map from each other. With no objectives the goal is total anihilation. Kill all of the opposing force before they kill you.

Environmentally, every wall can be shot through if you have the right gun. When you run around the map you can hear your footsteps, or someone else's, in the snow. The sound of heavy fire from all sides is all around you from the start, and often to the finish. Small walls peak out of the sides of the map on it's right and left paths, as well as an extended wall of ice at the middle point of each spawn point. Guns lay on the ground on each side to be picked up. The map is very simple. It's lack of complication raises the ire of many players who want something more "complicated" to do on the map, like the aforementioned objectives.

I find this map exhilarating. It's small size and simple design means it's often total chaos. You really have nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. Iceworld rarely offers any time for a player to take a breath and a lot of players never get to reload once before the round ends or someone gets them. You may find yourself going against 5 CT's by yourself or turn a corner into a firing squad. A split second decision to reload or pick up another gun off the ground can be pivotal on if you make it out of the round alive. It makes you think on your feet as you could be overwhelmed by opposing forces from any direction at any time. It's a Deathmatch type map though specific "Deathmatch" iceworld maps exist for those who don't like the short wait time between rounds on it.

Having played this map for a long time now, there IS strategy to it. The elegance of iceworld is in it's simplicity, and in some smaller details a lot of tactics and strategy on this map are missed for it's Deathmatch look and feel. Iceworld is great map to learn human behavior and how people react to intense shoot outs and large player rushes.

Using the AWP and watching two of the three paths is an obvious one. The middle should be guarded first to take out anyone trying to cross through it. Opposing AWPers will often have to be dealt with too because controlling the middle is strong for any team on this map. A second AWPer will usually cover what you are unable to, but if none exists cover the areas they are missing. Slowly make your way around the level. The AWP is not a quiet gun and on it's sound alone an enemy can find where your shot came from. Use the walls on the right and left for cover shooting through your own spawn point and to theirs. Drop it if necessary.

For the rushing player the SMG, TMP, Mac10, and p90 are taken so they can get to the other side as fast as possible with a gun they can spray with. Typically, this does not end well for the rusher because an AWPer is watching one of the sides they rushed on. Going up the middle often meets the safe fate due to the assault guns, and the AWP itself, well positioned to guard these areas from the start of the round. A rushing player may find it better to turn into the middle of the level and let all the other team's snipers check their points first before rushing in. Time is short on the map, so staying one second too short, or one second too long, at any spot may have you surrounded at any time, but the pause is important to make use of the opposing players natural rhythm to check the paths for enemies.

Assault rifles, like the Steyr Aug and Commando really shine on this map. At the beginning they're as good as AWPs watching all the major paths. When the map is winding down they allow accurate shooting at a distance without having to get into close combat. Iceworld's longest distances are often forgotten and these guns have the ability to let you move faster than when you have an AWP and still get a punch in your power. It's added power means it'll be easier than for other guns to take out multiple opponents at one time without the need to reload. Reloading is a skill in itself on Iceworld and making your need to reload less will make you stay alive a lot longer than most.

Shotguns change the game for the person with one. Not the auto shotgun, or "noob tube" as it's been immortalized, but the m3 single shot pump shotgun. Under a wave of gunfire you're likely to get one or two shots to their fifteen or more. In a map as chaotic as Iceworld the pump shotgun teaches best the use of the environment, however much or little you have of it. Skills some players take for granted that they have now but had to learn before can also be learned with this gun on this map. Strafing, shooting while moving, using walls for cover. The biggest of these the pump does wonderfully in the chaos of Iceworld is shooting while moving. While rushing on one side you fire at the enemy while heading somewhere else, mix moving and stopping to confuse your enemy's fire without messing up your own. Making sure the one shot you do get is accurate and will either kill the enemy or seriously hurt them, so if you get a second shot, you'll finish them off. The pump will have you finding yourself hiding, ambushing, and trying shots you would not normally try if you had a different gun under the same amount of fire from all directions.

Not all servers allow HE Grenades to be used. I find it's much easier to dominate with them, but are not necessary on the map. Grenade spamming is simple enough to do, and throwing one at the start of the map will almost always hit somebody. There are times when you will not throw them to your enemy's spawn, but that's usually when you see a rush coming that way and simply throw it in front of them.

On Iceworld the opposing team is trying to get your spawn point and you're trying to get to their's. This is very important to remember. Knowing you're attempting the same thing will go a long way in raising your Kill To Death ratio. Once they get to your spawn point they'll come back to their own. As Iceworld is a very time related map with everything happening in under a minute to two minutes tops, the passing time is important to know where the enemy is at any given moment. It doesn't take too long to cross the map without opposing gunfire coming your way so you should be able to put yourself in the right place as the map is winding down. Keep an eye on your teammates. Use their eyes to see around corners and find out what gun an enemy is using on their end. Locating AWPers is easy when they take out a member of your team as well. Your teammates also provide eyes where you are not there. You can plainly see if your team is winning or losing the gunfight if you went right when they went left. Note the guns they have and if any players over there may cause a problem for you. Particularly useful at the start of the round is to fire at the bottom of their wall, either on the right of left side. Many players simply duck behind a wall being shot at by the enemy and more often than not avoid getting hurt badly, or even hurt at all. Firing at the bottom of the wall often brings them around the corner.

A great training tool and guide for getting better at Iceworld and many other maps is the Counter-Strike Pwnage Guide. If you're rusty at anything I've mentioned or need to perfect it, it'll be a great investment and greatly increase your Counter Strike skills on any map. Iceworld may not be the most respected or popular map the game has ever had, but this guide and regular play will greatly improve your skills when put to use. I hope I'll see you some Iceworld servers.
